St. Francis Flames Participate in National Pink Shirt Day

A "Purr"-fectly Great Day to Learn about Pet Responsibility at St. Francis

02/24/2016 - The students of FDKFI in teacher Mme Lachance and Mme Lynne's (ECE) class at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School had a special guest recently. Charms the cat came by for a special visit as the students have been learning about the value of having a pet in the home. Although they are cute and cuddly, the children soon found out that owning a cat also requires care and responsibility. 02/11/2016 - On January 27, the students from St. Francis Catholic Elementary School celebrated Literacy Day. Students in kindergarten to grade six were asked to donate gently used books from their home and trade them in for“new” books. The event was organized by Special Education Resource Teacher, Ms. Graziella Visentin who encourages the use of technology to assist with reading as well as the use of traditional hardcopy books to practice reading skills.  Read more...


Technology Now Night at St. Francis

01/22/2016 - There was a line up to get into the building at 4:30 on Thursday, January 14 as students at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School eagerly led their parents into the gymnasium to show them all the ways that they use technology in their classrooms. Approximately 180 people attended the Technology Now night, which was planned by the St. Francis Catholic School Council with support from a government Parents Reaching Out grant. Bellmore New Chair of the Board at SCDSB

12/02/2015 - On Tuesday, December 1, 2015 Trustee Michael Bellmore was acclaimed as the new Board Chair for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Born in Sudbury, Bellmore is a proud alumnus of Sudbury Catholic Schools (Immaculate Conception and St. Charles College). He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2010, however he was elected to the former Sudbury District Roman Catholic Separate School Board in 1994 as one of the youngest ever elected, and served until 1997. Read more...

10/21/2015 - St. Francis Catholic Elementary School Flames students in teacher Christine Boudreau's Grade 1/2 French Immersion class were very excited to decorate pumpkins for Dynamic Earth's "PumpkInferno". SCDSB Cheers on LU

10/15/2015 - Sudbury Catholic District School Board elementary students were invited to cheer on their local Laurentian University Voyageurs hockey team during one of their season games. Students from St. Francis, Holy Cross, St. David, Holy Trinity, and St. Benedict packed the arena as they cheered on the Voyageurs as they won a victory over Nipissing 3-2 in a shootout.  Read more...


Thanksgiving Feast at St. Francis

10/13/2015 - St. Francis Catholic Elementary School Life Skills and Communication classes celebrated Thanksgiving with a feast at the school. The students were given the opportunity to participate in preparing the delicious meal -- turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and corn. The students decorated the room with beautiful artwork posters of what they are thankful for during this blessed occasion. Life Skills student, Shane Dempsey, stated that 'I am thankful for my teacher and her sister to help make the delicious turkey'.  Read more...

Summer Camp with a Spin

07/10/2015 - This year, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board is running a three week summer camp for students in grades 1-5 until July 24th. As well as offering programming for literacy and numeracy, there is also an Aboriginal Art and Literacy camp, which is designed to include literacy games and activities with culturally relevant curriculum including the Seven Grandfather teachers, Métis history, culture and the Pow Wow experience.  Read more...

Paths of Joy at St. Francis

05/11/2015 - Life Skills Primary/Junior students at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School were very excited to work on their 'Path of Joy' Project. When the students were asked 'What are some of God's creations that you will find when you go for a walk on the path?', the students shouted out answers such as ants, ladybugs, flowers, and birds. 'The students had a fantastic time creating the artwork for their display; listening and singing to music and a few even took a break between crafts and started dancing.  Read more...

Update on Negotiations

04/24/2015 - You may have heard in the media that the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association ((OECTA), representing elementary, secondary and occasional teachers in our Board voted to approve strike action. Central bargaining is continuing between the province, unions and the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association (OCSTA), which represents Catholic school boards at the provincial table. At present, we are not aware of any planned labour disruptions by OECTA. Read more...


Celebrating Earth Day at St. Francis

04/22/2015 - April 22, 2015 is Earth Day and the students in teacher Christina Bedoya's Gr.1/2 class at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School have been learning about how we all have an impact on our environment. Students learned and shared ways to help our environment through everyday tasks such as turning off the lights or taking a quick shower instead of a long one. They also learned the power of reducing, re-using and recycling because we truly have “the whole world in our hands”. Finding Momo at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School

03/24/2015 - The students at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School were very excited to have Momo, the main character of the New York Times best-selling book, 'Finding Momo' visit the school. Momo is a black and white border collie who's owner, Andrew Knapp, has driven across Canada photograhing Momo to create a canine version of the beloved picture book 'Where's Waldo'.  Read more...

St. Francis Catholic Elementary School Goes Gold!

09/12/2014 - On September 9th, St. Francis Catholic Elementary school students and staff were unable to attend Tom Davies Square where Mayor Matichuk proclaimed September Childhood Cancer Awareness Month in The City of Greater Sudbury and raised the Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer (NOFCC) flag. However, in support of this day, the students and staff wore yellow/gold on this special day and also in honour of Karissa Kruk who is a cancer survivor and a student at the school. This was a great opportunity for students to be aware of childhood cancer and to show school spirit at the same time. Read more...


Hands on Learning for St. Francis Students

06/20/2014 - St. Francis Catholic Elementary School teacher Rhonda Martel wanted to do something different for her students. As a teacher of the Junior Communications class, she knew that many of her students would be more engaged with hands on learning and looked for a way to bring this experience to her classroom. Made up of students ages 7-10 who have been identified with Autism or a communication learning disability, Martel knew that this class would really benefit with a unique hands on activity that would blend learning with a physical activity that the students would enjoy. Read more...

Recognizing World Diabetes Day at St. Francis

11/14/2013 - On Thursday, November 14, students and staff of St. Francis Catholic Elementary School showed their support for World Diabetes Day. As there are three students at the school who have diabetes, the students and staff came together and wore the colour blue to acknowledge the day and show their friends/students their support. St. Francis Students REMEMBER War Veterans

11/12/2013 - Students from St. Francis Catholic Elementary School in grade 2 and 3 eagerly wrote postcards to war veterans for Remembrance Day. The postcards were provided by Veteran Affairs Canada. The class put their friendly letter writing skills to use in order to compose a thoughtful message. Students in teacher Graziella Visentin’s class annually write postcards to thank veterans for being brave and courageous in order to protect others. The grade 2 and 3 students acknowledged the veterans’ efforts and their gratitude for the freedom we so much enjoy today. This year the postcards were sent to war veterans residing in Ottawa, Ontario.  Read more...

Students have been listening to their teacher read "Out Of My Mind" by Sharon Draper, and have connected with classes from around the world, such as California, Brazil and India, through Twitter, Kidblog and Edmodo. St. Francis Student Takes Top Honours in 5th Annual Fast Flowing Water Contest

06/06/2013 - On Thursday, June 6th, members of the community, as well as several classes from area elementary schools were on hand at Tom Davies Square for a news conference and awards ceremony for the fifth annual Fast Flowering Water Contest. Deputy Mayor Joscelyn Landry-Altmann (Ward 12) who is also Chair of the Junction Creek Safety Committee was on hand to address the crowd and announce the winners of both the video and poster contests. St. Francis Catholic Elementary School grade 6 student Sophia Zulich was the first place winner and had her poster unveiled on a 10’ x 20’ billboard that will be placed prominently in Sudbury.  Read more...

Celebrating Catholic Education Week

05/06/2013 - At St. Francis Catholic Elementary School, the students and staff have embraced this year's theme "Growing Together in Faith" in a very creative way. To bring the school community together as one, teachers Christina Bedoya and Lise Malette took all of the student photos and designed a "growing tree of life" which included a picture of every single student and staff member, including teachers, EAs ECEs, the custodian, administrators and the parish priest, Father Larry - all are all part of the tree.  Read more...


What's Inside My Computer?

05/01/2013 - Teacher Karen Healy and Early Childhood Educator Angela Ross' class use forms of technology everyday, but how does that technology work? Through hands-on investigation, the full day kindergarten class at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School was able to dismantle a computer tower and a laptop to get a closer look at what is inside. Students Aiden Galloway took apart the CPU fan to get a closer look and Violet Smith tried to figure out where the memory chip goes on the motherboard. RCMP Visits St. Francis FDK Class

04/23/2013 - Mme Lachance's and Mme Lynne's FDK French Immersion class had the pleasure of having a special guest visit their classroom. Sergeant Andre Lecoz shared his duties as an RCMP officer with the students. He explained all the features of his uniform and allowed the children to try on a smaller version of the coat and hat. Although many children thought he was a cowboy at first, at the end of the presentation they seemed to have a better understanding of what an RCMP actually does to help protect our society. Read more...

04/08/2013 - Little did Meagan Ierino, a Grade 6 student at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School know, that five months ago when she entered her poster into the Royal Canadian Legion, Lockerby Branch's, Remembrance Day Poster Contest, that her poster would win, not once, but three times; locally, divisionally, and now regionally! Art Moore was on hand from the Royal Canadian Legion, Lockerby Branch to award Meagan her medal and prize. The Royal Canadian Legion conducts their Remembrance Day Poster Contest and Public Speaking Contest annually, and invites students from all Sudbury schools to participate. St. Francis Kindergarten Students Take Part in an Explosive Inquiry

03/26/2013 - Flowing lava, rocks, heat and explosions were the topic of many conversations during the St. Francis Catholic Elementary School full-day kindergarten’s recent study of volcanoes. Mostly curious about lava and how the volcano erupts, the students, with the help of their teacher Karen Healy, were able to find many resources to answer their own questions. According to the students, creating a volcano in the class was the most exciting part of this inquiry and scientifically testing different types of pretend lava to see which flowed or erupted the best was the highlight of our volcano study. Read more...

03/22/2013 - On March 20, all Sudbury Catholic Schools took part in Franco-Fun Day activities. Franco-Fun day is a day dedicated to celebrating French language and culture. Whether it be French Immersion or core French students, each school set up a variety of activities to honour French language for all the classes. 12/07/2012 - Two St. Francis Catholic Elementary School students have won first prize in the Remembrance Day contests held by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 564. Students Remember War Veterans

11/27/2012 - Students from St. Francis Catholic Elementary School in grades 3 and 4 eagerly wrote postcards to war veterans for Remembrance Day. The postcards were provided by Veteran Affairs Canada. The class put their friendly letter writing skills to use in order to compose a thoughtful message. Students in teacher Graziella Visentin’s class annually write postcards to thank veterans for being brave and courageous in order to protect us. The grade 3 and 4 students acknowledged the veterans’ efforts and their gratitude for the freedom we so much enjoy today. This year the postcards were sent to war veterans residing in Ottawa, Ontario.  Read more...

Peace Tree at St. Francis

11/20/2012 - On Friday, November 16th all students at St. Francis School participated in a Peace Tree activity. This activity was the culmination of Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week, and focused on Mahatma Ghandi's message "Be the change that you wish to see in the world". After reading the book "The Tree" by Dana Lyons, classes talked about respect for the environment and how disruptive disrespect can be to the peace of a forest or wetland. They then made connections between this story and how disrespect disrupts peace in our school. Symbols of different cultures and faiths from around the world were provided to every class and students turned these symbols into ornaments for a Peace Tree, situated in the lobby of the school. The tree is now covered with ornaments, many of which also have messages about how they will promote peace in their school, home, local community and the world.  Read more...

Water Festival Enjoyed by St. Francis Students

10/18/2012 - On September 26, the grade 3 and 4 St. Francis Catholic Elementary students from teacher Graziella Visentin’s class attended the Sudbury Children’s Water Festival. Students ventured off to the festival held at the Anderson Farm in Lively. The annual event is an educational way of teaching students the importance of preserving and protecting the environment’s important resource, water. The Anderson Farm Museum was able to host the thirty-four activity stations in which the grade 3 and 4 students rotated throughout the day. Read more...

Fire Prevention Week Recognized by St.Francis Flames

10/16/2012 - St. Francis students from teachers Graziella Visentin and Sandra Narduzzi’s class have been learning about fire safety this month. The annual Fire Prevention Week was also recognized between October 7th and 13th with an elaborate display at the New Sudbury Shopping Centre court area. On Thursday, October 11, the grade 3 & 4 students from St.Francis School took part in a trivia game that many are familiar with from television entitled, Jeopardy.  Read more...
