St. Francis staff and students celebrated Literacy Day and their love of books with its annual book swap organized by the school’s resource teacher, Ms. G. Visentin. Staff and students kicked off the special event arriving to school dressed as their favourite story book character. Students donated gently used books from their home and traded them in for “new” books. The school’s gathering room had a large selection of book titles on display for students to choose from in both English and French languages. The book swap provided an excellent opportunity for students to reuse, exchange books and encourage reading.
St. Francis students collaborate to create their own community!
St. Francis students and staff are building community and collaboration through regular CLAN challenges. Today St. Francis School’s CLANs were challenged to build a snowman using the recycled materials from our Christmas door decorating contest. The students and staff had to build their snowman and were awarded points.
Each student and staff member is placed in a CLAN which is represented through the Medicine Wheel. Our CLAN challenges are held throughout the year, challenging students and staff to work together on common activities. Each CLAN challenge results in points being earned.
Maggie Polischuk, CLAN Captain said, “Our CLANs program gives us a chance to work collaboratively, be creative, have a voice and contribute to our school and community; all while being silly and having fun! Being part of a CLAN is like being part of a big family. We all become one!”

First ever STEM Olympics sees Holy Cross taking the gold!
The first ever STEM Olympics event was held today at St. Benedicts for some lucky Olympians from Holy Cross and St. Francis schools.
The event was organized by teacher, Loretta Cuda and involved four rotations – involving structures, catapults, boat construction and trivia.The morning began with Student Council President Adriana Cimino handing the opening ceremonies complete with the National Anthem.
Gold, silver and bronze medals were awarded to students with the gold medals going to the “Black Bears” team of John Cunningham-Dunlop, Nicholas Bodnar, Summer Bayer and Samuel Grossi at Holy Cross.
St. Francis School recognizes Learning Disabilities month!
Have you noticed the 2 000 blue flags along Paris Street in Sudbury? These little blue flags are in support of the citizens of Sudbury who have a learning disability. In recognition of Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, students and staff at St. Francis School wore blue on Friday, October 19, in support of fellow students with a learning disability who can learn differently.
St. Francis receives visit from Trillium!
Jennifer Hearn, from Resource Services Trillium Demonstration School in Milton, Ontario, visited St. Francis School on June 13, 2018. An overview of executive function skills was provided in relation to students with a learning disability. The classroom implications of a child’s developing executive function skills were outlined in the presentation. Methods to support and develop these skills were also investigated further. The school’s resource teacher, Ms. G. Visentin, was pleased to have the opportunity to have a teacher from the Trillium Demonstration School in Milton, Ontario visit and share her knowledge with staff who are directly involved with students who learn differently.
St Francis Flames Raise the Flag for Autism Awareness!
Many of our schools brought awareness to autism by wearing blue. Staff and students at St. Francis also took part in a special assembly to mark this important day! The group watched videos, sang songs and raised the flag to stand up for each other.

St. Francis and St. Charles College hold handball tournament!
This weekend was the Flames/Cards Handball Tournament held at St. Charles College. The boys tournament was held on Saturday with Holy Cross placing 1st, with Holy Trinity placing 2nd and St. John placing 3rd. On Sunday, the girls took the court with Holy Trinity A placing 1st, St. Francis placing 2nd and Holy Cross placing 3rd. Thank you to all of the coaches, volunteers and parents for all of their hard work this weekend!
St. Francis Flames donate money and hair to Northern Cancer Foundation!
What started off as a fun idea in a class quickly became a school-wide event, benefiting our community in more ways than one!
Together, the school raised $660 for the Northern Cancer Foundation. Ajani, a student at the school, also raised an additional $920 – bringing their total to nearly $1600!
Ajani, along with two teachers Melissa and Amanda, also decided to donate their hair to the foundation so that wigs can be made for patients in need! Flames prove time and time again just how selfless they are! Great job by all.
