Our NFVP (Northern Fruit and Vegetable Program) started today at St. Francis. This program is offered through a partnership between the Ministry of Health and Long term care, the Ontario Fruit snd Vegetable Grower’s Association and the Sudbury and District Health Unit. It is designed to increase awareness and consumption of fruits and vegetables among elementary school students in Northern Ontario. Today the students are eating carrots.
Shrove Tuesday and math learning
The St. Francis school community celebrated Shrove Tuesday (Mardi Gras) with mathematics this morning. Parents, grandparents and friends came and had a pancake breakfast with guest speaker, Krista Sarmatiuk, SCDSB Math Facilitator, followed by an hour of math games in their child’s class. Part of the conversation focused on how parents can be a solution at home using everyday authentic math and building positive mindsets. Thanks to all those who came out!
St. Francis Flames Participate in National Pink Shirt Day
Students at St. Francis wore pink shirts to show that we are all working together as a school community to prevent bullying. Students created a ‘pink link’ chain with encouraging words such as ‘courage, love one another and stand up’ against bullying.
St. Francis class celebrates 100 days of school
Mme Ranich’s grade 3/4 french immersion class at St. Francis School have been practicing math using a number line. Today, to celebrate the 100th day of school, the students were excited to create their own number line to 100!
St. Francis School celebrates Literacy Day with an annual book swap
On Friday, January 27, the students from St. Francis School celebrated Literacy Day. Students and staff arrived to school dressed as their favourite story book character to kick off the day. The school’s staff and students celebrated their love of books with its annual book swap organized by the school’s resource teacher, Ms. G. Visentin. Students in every classroom from kindergarten to grade 6 were asked to donate gently used books from their home and trade them in for “new” books. The school’s gathering room had a large selection of book titles on display for students to choose from in both English and French languages. The book swap provided an excellent opportunity for students to exchange books for free within their own school community, encourage reading and recycling.
Attendance Awareness Month poster contest
October was Attendance Awareness Month at Sudbury Catholic Schools and the Attendance Counsellors held a poster contest. In order to engage students from FDK to Grade 12, the poster contest promoted the importance of regular school attendance. It was a huge success with 447 students participating.

Hello God!
During recent months, several classes at St. Francis School have been participating in making beautiful “God Boxes” out of cards. The children then had the opportunity to fill them with tangible things that remind them what to thank God for as well as what to pray for.
Many boxes have been made, along with bible verses given to them. The verses tell us of God’s unending love for all his children. The students have been very eager to decorate their boxes. Each student personalized their own box, and were encouraged to bring it home, continuing to fill it with new hopes and prayers.

Kelso Invites his friend Benny the Bear to St. Francis School
Students at St. Francis school were very excited that Kelso invited his friend Benny the Bear from St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School to the October student of the month award assembly. This was a great opportunity for both school communities within the Sudbury Catholic District School Board to build friendships and partnerships.
Fire fighters visit St. Francis
The Kindergarten students at St. Francis Catholic School had very special guests visit! Many firefighters from our local fire department were there to teach the children the significance of fire safety in the school and in the home. September is a very important month for students to learn about fire safety and how to evacuate the school if there was ever an emergency. The children were so excited to sit in the fire truck, see the protective gear and to learn all about the duties of a firefighter. A special thank you to the City of Greater Sudbury Fire Department!

Dress Loud Day 2016
Following an activity filled Catholic Education Week, Speech & Hearing Awareness Month debuted with a bang! Staff and students were invited to Dress Loud on Friday, May 6th in order to raise awareness around the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Tip sheets focusing on speech, language, literacy and vocal hygiene will also be distributed throughout the course of the month.
