One Hundred Days of Junior Kindergarten at St.Francis

Junior kindergarten students at St. Francis celebrated the 100th day of school. Students brought their collections of 100 items such as pennies, beads, balloons, lego blocks and even yarn! Students sang their 100th day song to celebrate and received 100th day of school certificates to congratulate them on attending their first 100 days of school at St. Francis. Students listened to stories and even created their own class storybook about 100 foods they wish they could eat! The students ended the day with a special 100th day of school prayer.

National Flag Day at St. Francis School

Students in Mrs. Visentin’s junior kindergarten class at St. Francis School celebrated National Flag Day on February 15th. Students proudly painted their own Canadian flags to celebrate the day and learned that their country’s flag is 45 years old. Students have been reciting their pledge of citizenship and singing the national anthem since commencing school. It was a truly patriotic day for the junior kindergarten students.

St. Francis Students Wear Pink for Anti-Bullying Day

On February 23, St. Francis students from kindergarten to grade eight wore pink for Anti-Bullying Day. The young students in the junior kindergarten class have been listening to important lessons from various storybooks this week about bullying. Students learned an important lesson about kindness and tolerance from Steve Seskin and Allen Shamblin’s book entitled, Don’t Laugh at Me. The book encouraged the students to be kind to others and accept our differences.

SCDSB Elementary Schools Host Kindergarten Info/Registration Night

Parents and students had the opportunity on Tuesday, January 25to visit all Sudbury Catholic Elementary Schools to learn more about the Kindergarten and Early Learning programs being offered for September, 2011 Each school hosted an Information and Registration night and staff and Principals were on hand to answer questions about the English and French Immersion Programs in the schools and assisted in the registration process. Families went on tours of the school and learned more about the unique programming offered at all Sudbury Catholic Elementary Schools. Parents are reminded that registration is always ongoing and can contact either their local Catholic school to enrol their child(ren) or the Sudbury Catholic Board office at (705)-673-5620. St. Francis Champions of Bears’ Classic Boys’ Elementary Basketball Tournament

This past weekend, the St. Francis “A” took home the gold at the annual Bears’ Classic Boys’ Elementary Basketball Tournament.

Dr. Charles Pascal Visits St. Francis Catholic School

Dr. Charles Pascal visited Sudbury on May 20th and stopped in to see the St. Francis Best Start Hub. Dr. Pascal was appointed by Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty to be his special advisor on early learning in November 2007 and was asked to recommend the best way to implement full-day learning for four- and five-year-olds.
On June 15, 2009, Dr. Pascal presented his report, “With Our Best Future in Mind: Implementing Early Learning in Ontario”. The report contains 20 recommendations on how to introduce full-day learning to Ontario students, how to improve education for children up to 12 and how to increase supports for young families. Dr. Pascal interacted with the families at the St. Francis hub and also dropped into one of the senior kindergarten classes to participate in the circle time and story. He visited a number of other Hubs in Sudbury, including Pius XII Best Start Hub as he was in town to see the many great initiatives that support early learning within schools.

St. Francis S.K’s Sing Ole

The French Immersion Senior Kindergarten class at St. Francis Catholic Elementary School recently participated in a group activity in which they learned the e sound. The students learned a song that incorporated this sound – the song “Ole ” As well, they reviewed the letter C and the letter H. In order to review all of these lessons, their teacher, Lise Mallette thought that they could pull all of these together by supporting a great Canadian Hockey team – the Montreal Canadians. The students also integrated, cutting, pasting writing, singing and drama by decorating Montreal Canadian headbands and then visiting a few classes to perform what they had learned.

St. Francis Hosts Fun Fair

St. Francis held a Spring Fair on Thursday, May 6th in the evening. A great time was had by all who attended. All the feeder schools to St. Francis were invited as well. Estelle Scappatura allowed herself to be placed in our “St. Francis Jail” for a few minutes as part of the fun!! There were various games and activities to participate in.

Technology Showcased at St. Francis

Sudbury Catholic District School Board Trustee Estelle Scappatura stopped by St. Francis Catholic Elementary School recently. She was invited to join teacher Lyanne Marion’s Grade 5/6 French Immersion class as they worked with Tina Timpano, a Sudbury Catholic Teacher Integration Mentor teacher. The class was learning how to use different programs like Comic Life on the macbook as well as incorporating different technology like the ipod and digital video cameras into the classroom. Trustee Scappatura was amazed at how well the students could utilize the technology and was quite proud of their accomplishments!
